What you need to know
Every time you pay in a currency other than your card’s own, the issuer converts the amount. Many cards add a markup of 1–3% on top of the network rate. On a trip, that quietly costs more than most cashback earns.
The cards on this page charge no FX markup on the base tier. Some still apply a small weekend spread or limit the free amount per month; we note this in each review.
Dynamic currency conversion is a separate trap. If a shop or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in the local currency.
